Renault test driver and GP2 racer Nicholas Latifi will have his first opportunity to sample the Renault R.S.17 during a tyre test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The 21-year-old Canadian was signed up as Renault’s test driver and brand ambassador for Canada last year as part of a “long-term programme”.
Latifi had sampled Formula One machinery, but hasn’t been called up for any free practice appearances so far.
He will complete the test day as part of Pirelli’s two-day tyre testing schedule, with Renault already using Jolyon Palmer on Tuesday.
“I am extremely honoured to get this opportunity and I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the R.S.17 at the same venue I’ve just been racing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship,” said Latifi.
“As Test Driver for the team I’ve completed a number of different aspects of my programme so far, but this is really something special.
“I’m looking forward to working with the team and Pirelli to deliver everything they require from the day.”
Renault Sport Racing’s Managing Director Cyril Abiteboul added that the test would serve as a chance to prepare Latifi for further opportunities in the future.
“This is an exciting next step for Nicholas,” commented Abiteboul. “He will drive our current generation Formula 1 car at the same venue where the Spanish Grand Prix took place three days before.
This will offer invaluable experience to him and is a crucial element to preparing Nicholas for other opportunities in the future.”
Toro Rosso are the only other team attending the two-day Pirelli tyre test.
