Russian Grand Prix – Renault’s test and reserve driver Sergey Sirotkin will participate in the first free practice session at the Sochi Autodrom.
Having had the opportunity to sample the RS17 at the Bahrain test, Renault’s Sergey Sirotkin will be given a chance to impress at his home event.
The former GP2 race winner will take Nico Hulkenberg’s place for the opening session of the Russian Grand Prix weekend.
The 21-year-old has previously taken part in free practice for the Russian Grand Prix, last year for Renault and back in 2014 for Sauber. He also had a free practice outing at the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix.
“Obviously I’m very much looking forward to it!” said Sirotkin.
“I’ve learn so far this year that it’s not very easy to be at a race track but not in the car. Watching other drivers in action and competing is pretty frustrating as I want to be out there.
“I am learning a lot with the team and it is a positive and enjoyable process, just not as positive and enjoyable as racing itself.”
Despite his frustrations with not racing in 2017, Sirotkin added that he was happy to have time in the car.
“The Bahrain test was a good first time in the R.S.17. The cars are really quick this year but I feel back in rhythm despite having not been in a race car for six months.
“It was a full programme and I enjoyed every second of being in the car, even if the programme was not the most exciting for the driver.”
Renault are currently eighth in the constructors’ championship with two points.
