Fernando Alonso finished the two-hour rookie and refreshers Indy 500 test as the fastest driver, competing in the Andretti McLaren Honda.
Two-time Formula One world champion Alonso competed in the opening practice session for the 101st Indy 500, just over 24 hours after completing the Spanish Grand Prix.
During the two-hour practice session – held specifically for rookie and returning drivers – Alonso registered a 221.634mph lap, which translates into a 40.6074 second lap of the 2.5-mile oval.
He lead a Spanish one-two, with compatriot Oriol Servia finishing the session in second place in the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing-Honda, his best being a 220.759mph lap.
A four-hour test session for all competing drivers followed the two-hour rookie and refreshers test.
Alonso will be competing at the Indy 500 event for the first time in his career in a bid to win another race in the ‘triple crown of motor sport’; the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
