Bottas leads Hamilton in Mercedes 1-2 in second practice

Silverstone, UK

British Grand Prix – Valtteri Bottas has led a Mercedes 1-2 in the second practice session (FP2) at Silverstone for the 2019 British GP.

With the second practice session taking place in largely similar conditions to this morning’s ninety minute session at Silverstone, grip remained an issue throughout the afternoon. While there was no rain interruption from the British weather this time, several drivers, including championship leader Lewis Hamilton, did go off track over the FP2 session.

At the chequered flag, it was Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas who finished fastest with a time of 1:26.732 set on the Soft tyre, just 0.069 clear of Lewis Hamilton on the same compound.

Charles Leclerc finished P3 in his Ferrari, using the Soft compound to do a 1:26.929 to finish just under two tenths from the front. This was quarter of a second clear of Sebastian Vettel’s best time in the second Ferrari, who was another driver to slide off during the session.

Pierre Gasly, fastest man in FP1, was P5 in the lead Red Bull, ahead of Lando Norris’ McLaren and Max Verstappen in the other RBR.

The Red Bulls look set to be embroiled in battle with McLaren – both Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz got themselves in amongst the RBRs with Norris in P6 ahead of Verstappen, and Norris P8.

Alex Albon was P9 for Toro Rosso, as he rounded off a good day for his side of the garage, while Sergio Perez finished P10 for Racing Point.

Outside the top ten, Daniil Kvyat finished P11 for Toro Rosso ahead of the Haas of Kevin Magnussen. Kimi Raikkonen, having missed most of FP1 due to a power unit issue, was P13 as he made up for lost time, and Daniel Ricciardo was P14.

The Renault driver missed the last fifteen minutes of the session, as he had a technical gremlin towards the session’s conclusion. Driving over the kerbs through the Maggotts and Becketts complex, his car switched itself off and he crawled to a halt off the track. He clambered out and returned to the pits on foot. He finished just 0.002 seconds clear of Nico Hulkenberg in the sister Renault.

Lance Stroll was P16 for Racing Point, while Antonio Giovininazzi was P17 in the second Alfa Romeo. Romain Grosjean encountered a hydraulic leak on his Haas and missed another good chunk of the session after damaging his car during the morning track time, finishing P18. Robert Kubica was P19 and George Russell P20, both Williams making up the back row.
