David Schumacher will join the Formula 3 grid in a fulltime capacity in 2020, as he joins Igor Fraga and Niko Kari at Charouz Racing System.
David Schumacher, the 18 year old son of former F1 race winner Ralf Schumacher, will race for Sauber junior squad Charouz Racing System in Formula 3 in 2020.
Having tested with Charouz at the end of 2019, Schumacher raced for them at the Macau Grand Prix and finished in P21 from a 30 car grid. He also took part in the Sochi weekend with Campos Racing. With these events being his first proper foray into F3 level racing, Charouz have signed him up as part of their three man squad for 2020.
“I feel really happy and grateful to make the step up to FIA Formula 3 full-time with Charouz.” said Schumacher. “I drove two events at the end of last year and that was good preparation for the season ahead. I got to learn more about the car, and that’s valuable as we don’t have many practice opportunities during race weekends. I think we can make a step forward this season and I will try and finish as high as possible.”
Schumacher will be joined at Charouz by Niko Kari, the 20 year old Finn who was once part of the Red Bull programme. Kari scored two podium finishes by claiming P3 in Spain and Russia in 2019, and is retained for another year. The line-up is completed with 21 year old Brazilian driver Igor Fraga. He took part in the 2017 Formula 1 eSports Championship and won the inaugural FIA Gran Turismo Nations Cup, before being crowned champion of the McLaren Shadow Project. He claimed four wins in 2019 as he finished third in the Formula Regional European Championship and is currently leading the New Zealand-based Toyota Racing Series.
“We’re delighted to announce such an exciting driver line-up for the new season, and we’re thrilled to welcome three fantastic racers to the team.” said Antonin Charouz, team owner.
“Igor and David are newcomers to this championship but showed excellent speed and maturity in a competitive series last year, while Niko is very experienced in Formula 3 and will no doubt be among the front-runners. We’re excited to make a step in F3 after laying some solid foundations last season.”
