F1 Gossip Round-Up 10th September 2018

Singapore Grand Prix – Here’s all the latest gossip and rumours in Formula 1 ahead of the race in Singapore.

Ferrari and…who?

The biggest story in F1 at the moment. Just who will partner Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari next year? The official line is that there is none, but the heel-dragging over the Monza weekend (traditionally where Ferrari have revealed their plans) suggests that there are background shenanigans taking place. Is Leclerc contracted to drive, as per rumour suggests he was put under contract by the late Sergio Marchionne? Will Raikkonen be forced to step aside, and take up a weird hybrid driver/part-ownership role at Sauber that has been mooted? Or, more likely, walk away from Formula 1 altogether?

Either way, the fans are speaking out. A petition is currently on 75 thousand signatures, begging Ferrari to keep Kimi Raikkonen for another year. Unlikely to have much effect, as Ferrari are aware of how popular Raikkonen is regardless of the petition.

A swap to Charles Leclerc might be met with initial hostility by Raikkonen fans but the likeable Leclerc would be quick to soak all of that up. However, with Raikkonen’s form currently arguably even better than Vettel’s, are Ferrari doing the right thing to dispose of him?

Toro Rosso tease Sebastien Buemi

Since being dropped from Toro Rosso at the end of 2011, Sebastien Buemi has carved out a great career. Fearsome in the world of endurance racing, he’s a potent Champion with Toyota and has also become Formula E Champion with Renault. He also remains on Red Bull’s books, initially as a reserve and test driver and then a demonstration driver at promotional events.

With Toro Rosso currently on the look-out for drivers for 2019, they took the opportunity to tease a seat fitting with Buemi – something that is usually carried out once or twice a year as needed. With Brendon Hartley a former Red Bull affiliated driver picked back up again at the end of last year, it’s certainly not out of the question that Red Bull could choose to pick Buemi. Would he be willing to return to midfield mediocrity after what he’s achieved since?

Singapore GP to feature ‘grid girls’

While F1 no longer uses grid girls as part of the pre-race aesthetic, Singapore Airlines will be bringing along ‘brand ambassadors’ for the race at Marina Bay. Cabin crew women will be on the grid on Sunday, with the race’s title sponsor saying:

“Our cabin crew are brand ambassadors for Singapore Airlines and will continue to play an integral role in the upcoming Formula 1 2018 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix.”

Formula 1’s other glamour race in Monaco back in May also featured grid girls, but also had grid boys. These were brand ambassadors for TAG Heuer at the event.
