British Grand Prix – Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly says that he’s hopeful of turning his season around this weekend at Silverstone.
Having been solidly trounced by Max Verstappen throughout most of the opening half of the 2019 F1 season, Gasly’s nadir appears to have happened already as he finished a lap down on the Dutch driver last time out in Austria.
While Verstappen stormed his way to victory ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Gasly wound up just P7 and lapped at the chequered flag. This was despite no particular issues or race situations affecting things.
Heading to Silverstone, Gasly said he’s hopeful this weekend will allow him to stop the rot and that he has been working closely with Red Bull over the intervening two weeks to make sure everything is better: “There are many little things and when you add them all together, in the end, it makes things a little bit more difficult. All the things we are not going to sort at once but slowly, there are few things that aren’t that simple, but we should be able to fix those quickly – that will improve performance quite quickly. I am quite confident for this weekend.”
The French driver says his immediate focus is on improving things on a race by race basis: “For the moment, we need to sort a few things that are not coming together. It’s good to see improvement going in the right direction and the team is doing a good job. For sure I am pleased with that. I don’t want to look two, three races out. There are things I need to sort right now to improve performance and it’s the only thing I am thinking about.”
Having switched over to Red Bull Racing from Toro Rosso, Gasly was asked about his relationship with his race engineer Guillaume Rocquelin as they reach their tenth race together while working under pressure to perform: “I spend more time with my engineer than I do with my girlfriend so its important to have a good working relationship.”
“When you don’t really know each other there are certain things that are not perfect but its up to us, myself, engineer working around those things, to get to know each other creating this link that you need to extract the maximum out of ourselves and really get to know each other. These are things that will improve with more races, more experience together to understand a bit better each other. I am happy with him. He is a good guy.”
