Belgian Grand Prix – Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has crashed during the third practice session at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.
Championship leader Lewis Hamilton has crashed out of the final practice session in Belgium. With forty minutes gone in FP3, Hamilton brought out the red flags with a crash in Sector 2.
Heading down the hill from Pouhon into the fast right hand sweep of Signes, Hamilton took too much kerb on the entry to the corner and lost the rear. Correcting into the slide, Hamilton ran into the escape area and ran out of room. He hit the tyre barriers with his left front, destroying that corner of the car.
He was uninjured and radioed in to say “I’m in the wall guys, sorry” before clambering out and helping marshals recover the car onto the recovery truck.
The session was briefly red flagged to allow the car’s recovery and to get Hamilton back to the pitlane, with the session resuming with 14 minutes remaining – a time loss during the session of just under ten minutes as the countdown timer doesn’t stop for a red flag during a practice session.
Mercedes now face a race against time to have the car repaired for qualifying.
