Honda confirm power unit change for Verstappen after FP1 oil leak

Barcelona, Spain

Spanish Grand Prix – Max Verstappen has had his RB15 fitted with a new Honda power unit after FP1, due to an oil leak.

The Dutch driver finished FP1 down in P12 after an oil leak cost him over twenty minutes of track time towards the end of the session.

This has resulted in Red Bull fitting him out with a new power unit for the rest of the weekend but, according to Honda, this was only just ahead of schedule anyway as the drivers were running the old Spec 1 Honda power units:

“Both cars started FP1 with Spec 1 power units with a plan of changing them for Spec 2 tonight, therefore Max’s power unit change has just happened one session earlier than planned.” said Honda’s Tanabe-San.

“Pierre [Gasly] will continue to use the Spec 1 PU for FP2, before being changed for a Spec 2 tonight as originally planned.”

“Further investigations of the reason for the oil leak will now be carried out.”
