Formula E Champion Jean-Eric Vergne has encouraged Lewis Hamilton to join the electric series, with Hamilton feeling down about his carbon footprint.
Two time Formula E Champion Jean-Eric Vergne has extended an invitation to Lewis Hamilton to try out a Formula E car, in a bid to turn the reigning Formula 1 Champion’s head away from his current series.
Hamilton, posting on Instagram earlier this week, said he was ‘sad with where the world is going’. as he said that he wanted to play a better part in leading a ‘meaningful’ life. He said ‘Find the compassion I know you have within you to recognise what you are contributing to in terms of what you eat which keeps the meat and dairy industry flourishing and therefore deforestation, animal cruelty and our climate decaying on a daily basis’.
Encouraging his followers to ‘go vegan’, Hamilton’s comments raised an eyebrow as his choice of career, jet setting lifestyle and collection of sports cars would be the antithesis of what an environmentally conscious lifestyle could be interpreted as.
Formula 1 itself is a sport that is ever reducing its carbon footprint, but Jean-Eric Vergne has taken the opportunity to try tempting the F1 Champion to swap to the all-electric Formula E series. Tagging Hamilton in a post on Instagram, Vergne said: “Give me your thoughts on that! Formula E being the fastest growing motorsport series & with the level of competition the championship has reached in just five years and even more now that Mercedes and Porsche are onboard; I personally would love to see Lewis join us in a near future.”
“We are the only racing series that promotes green technologies & electric urban mobility! Now is the time to change our views and accept that we all need to take actions at our level for our planet.”
Mercedes, now with a Formula E team with Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck De Vries as their drivers for Season 6, would likely make it very easy for Hamilton to switch if he really wanted to, while Vergne also offered Lewis the chance to drive his title winning Techeetah if he fancied a go: “I know Toto [Wolff] has already offered you to test their car, but I’d be more than happy to let you try my championship winning car!”
