French Grand Prix – Race stewards at Paul Ricard have confirmed a grid penalty for Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat, due to a power unit upgrade.
The Russian driver is one of three drivers taking a fresh Honda power unit this weekend, with an upgraded Spec 3 power unit available for Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing.
While the Red Bull drivers were able to take fresh engines without penalty as they only now are moving onto their third permitted engines of the year, the Toro Rosso drivers are both on three already.
While Alex Albon won’t use the upgrade this weekend due to a lack of new engines manufactured in time, Kvyat will use the new specification and thus trigger automatic penalties.
As well as taking a new internal combustion engine, he will also take grid penalties for taking on a new MGU-H, Control Electronics and Energy Store.
A new turbo has also been fitted but this doesn’t trigger a penalty as he was still within his parts usage allowance on that front.
