Bahrain In-season Test – Mercedes development driver George Russell delivered the fastest time of the day in his first run-out of the W10.
With rain affecting the first day of the test, teams were treated to a full day of drying running, with George Russell setting the fastest time in the final half-hour of the day.
Russell – who is driving for Mercedes-powered Williams in 2019 – completed just over 100 laps and set the pace with a 1:29.029s, beating Racing Point’s Sergio Perez by less than one tenth of a second.
For reference, Russell’s time was three tenths faster than Max Verstappen’s best effort from yesterday.
Sebastian Vettel had led the morning session but, despite adding many more laps to his total, he failed to better his 1:29.319 from earlier in the day.
Once again McLaren ran two cars in the test, with one dedicated to testing Pirelli tyres. The main McLaren car was used by Lando Norris in the morning, and Carlos Sainz in the afternoon.
In their car dedicated to Pirelli, Sainz ran in the morning before the car was handed over to Fernando Alonso, who ran in the afternoon.
Running the McLaren test programme, Sainz set the fourth-fastest time in the afternoon, several tenths behind Russell’s benchmark.
A hefty day of mileage for Toro Rosso resulted in the team running over 250 laps between fifth-placed Daniil Kvyat (on Pirelli testing duties) and Alexander Albon, who came seventh in the order. They were split by Mick Schumacher who, after running for Ferrari yesterday, was at the wheel of the Alfa Romeo for today, finishing around one second off the pace.
Racing Point’s Lance Stroll had been in second place earlier in the day, but fell down the order to eighth after handing his car over to Perez for the afternoon.
Red Bull development driver Dan Ticktum was handed a test outing, completing a productive day which consisted of 135 laps of the Bahrain International Circuit.
Other junior drivers participating in today’s test included Pietro Fittipaldi (12th for Haas), Jack Aitken (14th for Renault) and Nicholas Latifi (15th for Williams).
