Louis Deletraz enjoys his ‘step forward’ on first day in F1 car

Louis Deletraz took part in his Formula 1 test at Yas Marina on Wednesday.

While Romain Grosjean & Kevin Magnussen enjoy the start of their winter break, Haas opted to give two new young guns track time in the VF-18 over the two day Pirelli test in Abu Dhabi.

Tuesday saw Pietro Fittipaldi at the wheel. The 22 year old grandson of World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi, he had a solid day although didn’t get as much mileage as he would have wanted, due to an engine issue.

Haas clearly have a penchant for the latest generation drivers. While Kevin Magnussen is the son of 90s racer Jan, they opted to test Louis Deletraz in the car on Wednesday. Louis is the son of another 90s racer – Jean-Denis – who raced with Larrousse & Pacific.

The 21 year old put in 117 laps without issue, with a best time of 1:39.069 on the 2019 prototype HyperSoft tyre. He finished P11 overall.

According to Haas, Deletraz’ program was made up of short runs for pace, and long runs for tyre evaluation.

“It was a pretty amazing day.” Deletraz said afterwards.

“It was my first Formula One test. It’s been a dream since I was a kid. It’s another step forward and the day went very well. We recorded 117 laps, which is a lot of tire testing and a lot of data. I did my best, and I hope the team is happy with my efforts. I really enjoyed it.”

While Deletraz is a former Renault Sport young driver, he never got to drive their F1 car. He’s been racing in Formula 2 this year, and finished P10 in the points. He says he didn’t struggle with adjusting to the much faster car after jumping from his Charouz from the Abu Dhabi weekend:

“Physically, I was fine. I didn’t struggle at all. I got to know I was testing around a month ago, but I’ve been preparing for this anyway. Formula One is always the objective. It’s been a great day and it’s been even better to share it with my long-term sponsor, ADSS. I think we both learned a lot today. It’s good for the future. It’s been a day we’ll always remember.”
