Mick Schumacher, son of the legendary 7 time World Champion Michael, recently won his first race in Formula 3.
The 19 year old son of Michael Schumacher, Mick began racing in the European Formula 3 Championship last season. He finished 12th in the standings, with just a single podium to his name at the end of the year. Continuing with Prema for this year, he has shown a marked increase in competitiveness. Heading to Spa at the end of July, he claimed pole position for the second race before going on to win his first F3 round in the final race of the event.
Racing for Prema, who have won the team championship every year recently, Schumacher is following in the footsteps of Champions such as Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, Esteban Ocon & Raffaele Marciello. While he is yet to fully challenge for the series crown, he acknowledges luck hasn’t been on his side: “The championship is, for sure, very strong. We have good drivers, who all came from karting. For me, unfortunately, the luck wasn’t on my side up to now. I’m really hoping that the rest of the season gets better, and that the luck is a bit on my side. I will fight until I’m on the top step.”
“For sure, my goal was always F1, and it’s still my goal. Now we’re doing one step after the other. I’m looking forward to it.”
Spa-Francorchamps and the Schumacher name seem ensconced at this point, with Michael making his debut at the Belgian track in 1991, winning his first F1 race there in 92 and winning it five more times between 1995 & 2002.
“I have only good memories of Spa.” said Mick. “As everybody knows, this is, let’s say, the living room of my dad. I really like and love racing here, because I know that he raced here as well. I’m always happy to be here and every year to come back here.”
