Bahrain Grand Prix – McLaren have been forced to put a new engine and ancillaries in the MCL34 of Carlos Sainz for this weekend.
McLaren have been forced to fit Carlos Sainz’ car with a new power unit after his Australian Grand Prix retirement two weeks ago.
For this event, his MCL34 has been fitted with a new power unit, turbocharger, MGU-H & MGU-K. Just three PUs, turbos and MGU-Hs are permitted for the entirety of the season, and just two MGU-Ks. Once parts outside of this pool are required, it means that the driver will be forced to take grid penalties. Thus, this means that should Sainz require a further MGU-K beyond the two he’s used already this season, he will take a grid drop.
McLaren are yet to confirm whether the power unit components that let go during the Australian Grand Prix can be salvaged and re-used at a point further down the line.
