Alonso – We need some chaos in the race

Chinese Grand Prix – Fernando Alonso is hoping for a chaotic race on Sunday to help him score points.

The Spaniard starred in qualifying by putting his McLaren-Honda 13th on the grid, but is not predicting an easy race with his only saviour being forecasted rain showers.

“For tomorrow’s race, the expected rain will help us, since in dry conditions it would be difficult to score points, but in wet conditions anything could happen,” he said.

“We need some chaos in the race, basically. We’ve raced here in those conditions in the past so we have to use that experience and take any opportunity that opens up in front of us.”

The lack of performance from the Honda engine means that Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne are reportedly running out of electrical energy halfway down the 1.1km back straight.

Engine performance is something that can be neutralised during wet races, however, which would give Alonso a chance at scoring points on Sunday.

“If it rains it will be a good race to watch for the fans: they’ll enjoy it and for us it’ll be fun too – if we can take our chances.”

Team mate Stoffel Vandoorne qualified 16th having been delayed in making his appearance on track at the start of Q1 as his engine would not start.
