Hungarian Grand Prix – Pierre Gasly led Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in an unrepresentative FP2 before steady rain staggered proceedings.
In tricky conditions with varying levels of track grip, Gasly’s early soft-tyre effort of 1:17.854 was enough to top the second free practice session before intensifying rain prevented any further slick-tyre running.
His best lap was just half-a-tenth of a second faster than team-mate Verstappen, who ran the medium-compound tyre, and just over one tenth of a second faster than Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, whose best time was on the hard-compound tyre.
With spots of rain already affecting the start of the session, drivers were always going to struggle to beat the low-1:17s times from FP1.
Alex Albon was the only man to properly fall foul of the tricky conditions at the Hungaroring; the Toro Rosso driver lost control of his car at the final corner after driving slightly onto the grass in the opening minutes of the session.
He quarter-spun off the track and collided with the barrier, bringing out the red flags and putting him out of the session.
After initially looking like he might lose a lot of track running, the blow of being out of FP2 contention would’ve been softened by a general lack of running for everybody else.
Drivers had a few laps of slick tyre running, but the increased rainfall meant drivers pitted to protect their cars and tyres.
With conditions mostly being too wet for slicks, and too dry for intermediate tyres, very little running was completed until the final 25 minutes, by which time the track had become wetter. Due to this, the earlier slick-tyre times remained unbeaten.
This meant the top three times were unchallenged, leaving Gasly to finish the session fastest, ahead of Verstappen and Hamilton.
Valtteri Bottas finished fourth, three tenths off the pace, ahead of Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo, Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
The second Renault of Nico Hulkenberg, the other Alfa Romeo of Antonio Giovinazzi and Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat completed the top ten.
