Barcelona Testing – McLaren have carried out a filming day shakedown of their new MCL32, with both Fernando Alonso & Stoffel Vandoorne getting the chance to drive the car.
Formula 1 teams are allowed carry out two filming days over the course of a season, using current machinery. However, such days are restricted to 100 kilometres distance and the car must run on demonstration Pirelli tyres designed for such an event. The purpose of these days is to allow teams to record footage for commercial purposes, but also serves as a handy means of conducting a shakedown.
McLaren have opted to use one of these days on Sunday in Barcelona. With official pre-season testing set to start on Monday at the Circuit De Catalunya, the MCL32 has taken to the track in the hands of both 2017 race drivers.
Fernando Alonso took the wheel in the morning, shaking down the Honda-powered 2017 car under the Spanish sun. The new car, sporting a new orange & black livery, certainly looked the part on track as it snaked around and it didn’t encounter any initial teething issues. New signing Stoffel Vandoorne, the 2015 GP2 Champion and replacement for the departing Jenson Button, also had his chance to take the wheel in the afternoon.
