Red Bull launch championship challenger RB13

Red Bull have launched the RB13; the car tipped to challenge Mercedes for the 2017 world championship.

As Formula One returns to an aero-dominated formula Red Bull, known as the best team when it comes to aerodynamics, are expected to take the step up and fight for wins this year.

Like the majority of 2017 cars, the RB13 has a thumb-tipped nose and has a shark fin, rather than a T-wing which Mercedes and Ferrari have shown.

The nose does, however, feature a hole at the end. It is as yet unclear as to its purpose, but the likelihood is either for cooling or as a further development of the S-duct which takes air flowing around the front of the nose and redirects it around the cockpit.

Red Bull finished second in the constructors’ championship last year after a power boost from Renault gave them the engine performance necessary to utilise their car.

Max Verstappen took victory in Spain following the first-lap collision between the two Mercedes drivers, and Daniel Ricciardo also took a win in Malaysia after Lewis Hamilton’s engine blowout.

Ricciardo also almost won in Monaco, but a slow pit stop which saw his tyres unprepared for when he came into the pit box, cost him the race.

Red Bull remain powered by the Tag Heuer-branded Renault engine. The power unit has been completely redesigned from 2016, with the new layout and concept expected to be worth three tenths of a second.
