Sauber unveil 2017 challenger

Sauber has become the latest team to reveal their car which will compete in the 2017 season.  The car is adorned with a special anniversary livery celebrating their 25th season in Formula One.

The Sauber C36-Ferrari was designed with an emphasis on ‘aerodynamic stability’ rather than maximising downforce performance.  The C36 features wider front and rear wings, as well as a bigger diffuser in line with this seasons’ regulation changes.

The car will run the Abu Dhabi 2016 spec Ferrari engine.  Jorg Zander, Sauber Technical director believes that the familiarity of the powertrain will benefit the team.

“Being able to get started early and defining the engine environment was an advantage because the team was familiar with the engine and the transmission as well as the cooling requirements the engine entailed.”

Sauber had a poor 2016 languishing in the lower mid-field positions.  However, the team managed to snatch two points at the Brazilian Grand Prix pushing them ahead of Manor in the Constructors Championship.

The car will hit the track on February 27 when pre-season testing gets underway at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

CEO & Team Principal Monisha Kaltenborn said: “Together with Longbow Finance S. A., we have great opportunites to be competitive again and to return to previous successes in Formula One. We want to position ourselves with a new approach, and we have already taken the first steps in order to build a solid foundation for the future.“

“We clearly have to improve,” says Monisha Kaltenborn. “With the Sauber C36-Ferrerai we have a solid basis as well as the resources to further develop the Sauber C36-Ferrari through the season. This will be important to establish in mid-field.”
