Williams have announced the signing of two new lead designers, who will take up their roles at Grove ‘in the near future’.
Williams have signed two new lead designers ahead of the 2020 season, although they can’t start just yet as they go through a period of gardening leave from their existing teams.
David Worner has been signed as Williams’ new Chief Designer. He is currently working for Red Bull and Toro Rosso’s Synergies initiative. He’s got a lot of Formula 1 experience, as he’s been working in F1 since 1997. Starting his career with Arrows as a Design Engineer, he moved to Jaguar in 2003 after Arrows’ demise before Red Bull bought out Jag in 2004. He then worked as a Senior Suspension Designer before become Head of Suspension in 2007. He then became Deputy Chief Designer in 2014.
Jonathan Carter has been signed as his Deputy Chief Designer, and will also be Head of Design at Williams. He began his motorsport career in 1979 with Reynard, and also worked alongside Worner at Arrows before moving to McLaren in 2002.
Carter is attributed for McLaren’s first composite maincase and for advancing the team’s monocoques through the mid 2000s. He became Principal Engineer before becoming Deputy Head of Vehicle Design in 2012.
He moved to Renault then and became Head of Composite Design in 2015.
Leading the design of the cars for Williams once they take up their roles, Worner and Carter step into the void left by Paddy Lowe after his departure from the team following the disastrous introduction and underperformance of the 2019 FW42.
“Dave and Jonathan bring enormous experience, knowledge and skills to the Williams team, and we are delighted that they are joining us in the near future.” said Williams’ Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams. “They will strengthen our design capabilities and work closely with Adam Carter, our Chief Engineer, and the other senior members of the Engineering team on the design and development of the next generation of Williams F1 cars.”
In other personnel changes, Adam Carter has been appointed as Chief Engineer. He’ll be responsible for the integration and coordination of activities across the core engineering functions and delivery of vehicle programmes.
