Testing – Pirelli’s 2018 tyre testing program resumed on Tuesday, with Mercedes providing a W09 for use.
Separate to official Formula 1 testing, which is open to all teams, Pirelli are carrying out their own tyre testing program throughout 2018. All ten teams will get a chance to participate on behalf of Pirelli, with different venues being used throughout the year.
For instance, Ferrari carried out wet tyre testing at Fiorano back in April, while Force India & McLaren carried out slick tyre testing alongside the official test in Barcelona a fortnight ago.
Paul Ricard is the venue for this week’s test, which sees Mercedes run George Russell in the W09 for wet tyre testing. As it is currently quite sunny and warm in the south of France, artificial dampening of the circuit is required using tankers and sprinkler systems. Paul Ricard returns to the calendar this year, with the French Grand Prix scheduled for the 24th June.
Further tests throughout the year will see all the teams given track time, with none being told the specifics of the compounds that they are running.
