Bahrain Grand Prix – Kimi Raikkonen brought home more valuable points for Alfa Romeo in Sunday’s race, finishing P7 in his second race with the former Sauber squad.
Raikkone qualified P9 for Sunday’s race, making it into the Q3 session for the second consecutive time with the midfield team. He then enjoyed a combative race, running the Medium tyre for the middle stint before a 24 lap sprint to the finish on the Soft tyres. He was set for a P8 finish when the Renault of Nico Hulkenberg blew up in front of him in the closing stages, elevating him to P7 behind Lando Norris. A late attack on the McLaren was stymied by the arrival of the Safety Car on track to cover the simultaneous Renault retirements.
“Most parts were OK, but the middle stint was very difficult at times.” said Raikkonen afterwards.
“The car was so bad, well not so much the car but the conditions with the wind and tyres. The tyres seemed to work well in the second part of the lap but with the tailwind into Turns 6/7/8 & 10 it was so difficult.”
“We swapped the last set of tyres and then it felt very good. I was fuel saving but we still caught up with the others. Bit of a shame I just couldn’t get that McLaren after having a few runs on him but he just had the traction on the exit onto the straight.”
Raikkonen’s P7 means Alfa have now scored ten points, elevating them to P4 in the Constructor’s Championship. Teammate Antonio Giovinazzi finished outside the points in P11.
