Azerbaijan Grand Prix – Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo topped the second free practice session ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and team-mate Max Verstappen.
Both Red Bull and Ferrari appear to have the upper hand in qualifying and race trim after out-pacing Mercedes throughout the FP2 in Baku.
The unique conditions of the Baku City Circuit meant that several drivers attempted multiple ‘flying laps’ on the same set of tyres whilst completing their qualifying simulations.
Ricciardo’s second flying lap of a 1:42.795 was less than one tenth of a second faster than Raikkonen, and just over one tenth of a second faster than team-mate Verstappen.
Verstappen managed to complete a much cleaner session than he’d managed in free practice one, but he still looked the more ragged of the Red Bull drivers, running wide at a couple of corners.
Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton came several tenths behind in fourth and fifth for Mercedes, whilst championship leader Sebastian Vettel was outside the top ten after failing to set a clean lap time.
On the longer runs, Mercedes still seemed unable to find an answer for the ultimate pace, which appeared a closely-matching contest between Red Bull and Ferrari.
McLaren’s Fernando Alonso finished the session in sixth, ahead of a much-improved Force India of Esteban Ocon.
The two Renault’s faced tyre wear issues in free practice two, but nevertheless finished with Carlos Sainz in eighth and Nico Hulkenberg in tenth, separated by the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.
