Sergio Sette Camara joins McLaren young driver program

McLaren have announced that former Red Bull Academy driver Sergio Sette Camara has joined their Young Driver Program.

20 year old Brazilian Sergio Sette Camara has been signed as McLaren’s test and development driver for 2019. The F2 racer, currently P6 in the standings with Carlin Racing, has been signed by McLaren to provide support to current F2 contemporary Lando Norris, who will race for the team in 2019, as well as Carlos Sainz.

Like Sainz, Camara is a former member of the Red Bull program, having been signed as a Red Bull Junior in 2015. Having tested with Toro Rosso at Silverstone in 2016, he was dropped from the program prior to the 2017 season.

“We’re delighted to welcome Sergio to McLaren and our Young Driver Programme.” said McLaren Sporting Director & fellow Brazilian Gil De Ferran.

“We’ve been following his progress for some time and believe he is a promising young talent with a real potential. We’re looking forward to working with him to develop his skills as a well-rounded driver, while having him support our racing operations.”

Should Camara get the chance to drive the McLaren at any event in 2019, he will be the first Brazilian to drive at a Grand Prix weekend since Felipe Massa’s retirement in 2017, and the first Brazilian in a McLaren since the late Ayrton Senna, although Ricardo Zonta did test with the team in 1998.

“It’s my dream to one day become a Formula 1 driver, and I’d like to thank McLaren for giving me this incredible opportunity.” said Camara. “My aim is to integrate myself in the team and work as closely with them as possible; to listen, learn and help to develop as a driver, as well as support McLaren.”
