With the confirmed arrival of the Dutch Grand Prix to the calendar in 2020, it appears it is the Spanish Grand Prix that is set to be axed from the schedule. However, this is yet to be confirmed, and now it appears as though the people behind the Grand Prix in Barcelona aren’t willing to give up on the event just yet.
In a press release issued by Spain’s RACC, the promoters behind the Spanish Grand Prix urged Spanish administration, Generalitat de Catalunya, and the business world to ‘reach a consensus to renew the race and be able to maintain one of the most important sporting events in the world held every year’.
They go on to say that the continuation of the Grand Prix is a strategic decision for the country on a business, economic and sporting level and that a solution must be ‘urgently’ found.
The economic impact on the service, automotive, tourism, transport and leisure industries is cited at being worth around 163 million euro and the direct provision of 2700 jobs.
They also say that the media impact of over 900 media personnel per year brings visibility to Spain, and contributes to the reputation of excellence of the image of the country.
The Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya was first raced in 1991, and has been on the calendar every year since.
