Mexican Grand Prix – Daniil Kvyat has been given a ten second time penalty for colliding with Nico Hulkenberg on the last lap.
Daniil Kvyat has been given a time penalty and demoted from the points after a last lap clash with Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg.
The Russian driver was in P10 and fighting Nico Hulkenberg over P9 when Kvyat tried to launch up the inside of the Renault into the final corner. However, he misjudged it and hit Hulkenberg and spun him around. Hulkenberg went backwards into the tyre barriers and lost his rear wing.
Kvyat was able to continue and finished in P9, while Hulkenberg limped across the line with his broken car in P11.
A stewards enquiry was quickly launched and equally quickly decided as Kvyat was given a ten second time penalty which drops him to P11 and out of the points. Hulkenberg is promoted to P10 and so only loses a solitary point compared to the position he was knocked out of.
Toro Rosso confirmed the penalty immediately after the race, saying: “Daniil Kvyat has been handed a 10-second time penalty for his collision with Hulkenberg which demotes him to P11 and sees Pierre Gasly finish P9.”
