Vettel: Close between us and Red Bull

Silverstone, UK

British Grand Prix – Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel says he thinks Mercedes are top dogs this weekend, and that it’s between Ferrari & Red Bull to finish second.

Sebastian Vettel finished P4 at the end of the second practice session on Friday at Silverstone, just behind his teammate Charles Leclerc. This was an improvement from the first session, where the Ferraris ended up P5 & P6 with the German driver again behind his teammate. The improvement in positions between the morning and afternoon came at the expense of Red Bull, who dropped down from first and third in FP1 to P5 & P7 in the afternoon.

With further small updates brought onto the Ferrari for this weekend, most of the team’s test programme on Friday was focused on aerodynamic evaluation, but it was a tricky one for Vettel as he struggled for grip. He was one of the drivers to have several off track moments, including a pretty wild one entering the Hangar Straight.

Speaking afterwards, Vettel said he enjoyed the day’s action but the Mercedes drivers seem to have the edge at this early point of the weekend: “It’s good to be driving at this circuit again and the new surface seems a lot smoother than the old one, with a lot higher grip, which makes it good fun. I would say the lap times don’t mean much today, as usual on a Friday, but it’s clear that Mercedes seem very strong and are the ones to beat.”

Having taken the initiative from Red Bull in the afternoon, Vettel says that it looks like its going to be another tight battle between the two teams to finish as next best: “It looks quite close between us and Red Bull, but as we were trying some new things on our car, it’s a bit hard to judge. We must wait for tomorrow to get a clearer picture of where we are.”
