Vettel heads Ferrari 1-2 in final practice – FP3 Report

Montreal, Canada

Canadian Grand Prix – Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel has gone quickest in the final practice session ahead of qualifying at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

The German driver set a 1:10.843 close to the end of the final practice session, to go just over a tenth clear of his teammate Charles Leclerc.

In what turned into a tit for tat session of trading fastest times between the Ferrari and Mercedes drivers, it was the two Ferraris who were able to get their fastest laps below the 1:11 mark, with Vettel setting his fastest time on 6 lap old Soft tyres. Leclerc’s fastest time was just over a tenth behind, with a 1:10.982.

Mercedes weren’t too far behind, however, with Lewis Hamilton doing a 1:11.236 to be 0.393 behind Vettel’s benchmark time. Valtteri Bottas was P4 in the second Merc, and 0.688 from the front. However, with Mercedes having rolled out a new specification power unit and with most of their time loss coming in the mostly straight sector three, it remains to be seen if they were running their engines to their full potential.

Red Bull were best of the rest, with Max Verstappen settling into P5 and a second from the front. Pierre Gasly was P6 in the second RBR.

Daniel Ricciardo was P7 for Renault, with Lando Norris impressing early in the session by competing with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen for best of the rest. However, by session end, he had been shuffled back down to P8. He was ahead of Racing Point’s Sergio Perez and the Toro Rosso of Daniil Kvyat in P9 and P10 respectively.

Lance Stroll, the local hero, was unable to take part in the session after suffering a reported hydraulic failure at the end of the back straight. He was able to get back into the pitlane with the rear of his car on fire, and there are now question marks over whether he may need any new power unit or gearbox components.
