Vettel says he felt Hamilton didn’t leave him room in Turn 3 clash

Italian Grand Prix – Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel says he felt Lewis Hamilton didn’t leave him enough room when the pair collided on the first lap of the race.

Heading into Turn 3 of the opening lap, Vettel came under attack from Lewis Hamilton, with the Mercedes driver opting to go around the outside of the Ferrari to take the inside line for Turn 4. With Vettel hemmed in on the inside, the pair made contact at the apex and the Ferrari driver came out worst as he spun. While Hamilton was able to continue without damage, Vettel’s car had front wing damage and he had to pit under the Safety Car to change for a new one.

Speaking after the race, Vettel said he felt he had left the Mercedes driver enough room:

“I tried to pass Kimi and then he [Lewis] opened the brake. left Lewis space but then I was the one who span around which is ironic. He didn’t leave me any space. No option, I made contact and I was spun around. Then we were at the back and had to come back.”

Vettel eventually finished P5, moving up to P4 due to a five second time penalty for Max Verstappen who finished ahead on track. The result leaves Vettel trailing Hamilton by 30 points in the Driver’s Championship with seven races remaining.

Asked about how much the result hurt, particularly as teammate Kimi Raikkonen was powerless to stop Hamilton from stealing the win in the closing stages as the Ferrari’s tyres fell away, Vettel said:

“It’s not like I won’t wake up tomorrow. Its deflating… But we couldn’t do it.”
