Williams sign Nicholas Latifi as third driver

Canadian racer Nicholas Latifi has been signed as Williams’ test and reserve driver in Formula 1 next season.

Williams have announced Nicholas Latifi as their third/reserve driver for 2019. The 23 year old has been racing in Formula 2 (formerly GP2) since 2015, finishing P9 in the 2018 season.

Alongside that campaign, he was a development driver with Force India and took part in several FP1 sessions over the year. He has also had the same role previously with the Renault team.

According to Williams, Latifi will get the chance to drive in several FP1 sessions as well as two in-season test days and at least one day of pre-season testing. Pirelli tyre testing, which takes place at ‘private’ tests over the course of the season, are also on his itinerary.

“I’m thrilled to be joining an iconic team like Williams as a reserve driver for 2019.” said Latifi.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to continue my F1 development and to build my on-track experience with more FP1 sessions and the rookie and Pirelli tests.”

“As well as this, a big part of my role will be simulator driving and helping to support the development of the new car. I look forward to spending time in the factory at Grove, immersing myself within the team and assisting wherever I can. This is an amazing opportunity that I’ve been given and I’m excited to get started.”

Latifi will be the reserve driver for George Russell & Robert Kubica – should either of them be unable to take part at a race, Latifi would be the first port of call.
