Fernando Alonso begins Dakar testing with Toyota

Fernando Alonso is spending a few days in South Africa testing the Dakar winning Toyota Hilux.

Less than a fortnight after wrapping up another victory with his Toyota Gazoo WEC team at Sebring, Fernando Alonso flew to South Africa on Tuesday to begin a two day test with the Toyota Gazoo Dakar Rally team.

While there are no confirmed plans for Alonso to take part in the extreme annual rally event, the Spaniard has been dabbling in other high profile motorsports over recent years. This year, his commitments lie with Toyota in WEC as well as an Indy 500 entry with McLaren, as well as a sportscar entry in IMSA at Daytona in January.

Alonso took the wheel of the Hilux, rallied by 2019 class winners Nasser Al-Attiyah and Matthieu Baumel in this year’s event and slowly got to grips with the very different driving experience of a rally raid car.

Beaming afterwards, he said: “We built the speed slowly, lap after lap, and getting more confident. Obviously, you know, the bumps are difficult to read how high they are and how much speed you can carry on them. The car feels great, good grip and balance. Good power and braking too so everything feels amazing so I’m really happy.”
