Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton beat Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel by less than two tenths of a second in FP2 at the Yas Marina Circuit.
Following Vettel’s time-topping free practice one, the Ferrari man found himself pegged back by 2017 world champion Lewis Hamilton.
With lap times reducing by well over one second, Hamilton emerged as the fastest man with a 1:37.887, edging Vettel by 0.149 of a second.
Daniel Ricciardo’s time of 1:38.180 was three tenths off Hamilton’s pace, however the Red Bull driver’s time was set on his second timed lap of the Ultra Soft tyre, leaving question marks over the team’s pace compared to Mercedes and Ferrari.
The second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen was a further two tenths of a second back from Ricciardo, whilst Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen completed the top six, but were unable set representative lap times.
The two Force India’s of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon were separated by only 0.01 of a second as they finished the 90-minute session in 7th and 8th respectively.
Renault refrained from setting a time on the Ultra Soft tyre in FP1, however Nico Hulkenberg set the ninth-fastest time on the fastest compound, ahead of McLaren’s Fernando Alonso, who completed the top ten.
