Steiner confirms ‘quite significant’ upgrade for Haas in Spain

Barcelona, Spain

Spanish Grand Prix – Haas’ team boss Guenther Steiner says the VF-19 will be running a raft of updates in Spain as they attempt to rectify their troubled start to 2019.

The young American team are heading to Europe with just a solitary points finish from their eight race starts this year, courtesy of Kevin Magnussen’s Australian P6. Having been consistently fighting in the upper midfield in 2018, this slump has been attributed solely at the feet of tyre woes. Steiner has already confirmed that the team haven’t been able to unlock race pace on the tyres.

Heading to the first round of the European leg of the season, it’s the first chance for the teams to make changes to their cars. Steiner has confirmed that the VF-19s will feature new updates, with the aim of fixing the team’s ongoing issues: “We’re bringing our first upgrades of the year. A lot of parts on the car will change – the front wing, the floor and a lot of the smaller parts, like mirrors. It’s a quite significant upgrade. We want to show everyone how good we should be if we get the tyres to work.”

With this weekend’s race venue also playing host to the entirety of the pre-season testing where Haas looked competitive, it gives them the opportunity to compare and correlate their accumulated data against their testing baseline: “We have a lot of data. We need to make sure that everything still correlates after four races and that our upgrade works, as well. We’re looking forward to it, to see where we compare from our time there in preseason testing.”

“The hope is that it all works as it did in testing. We’ve obviously lost a little bit of confidence after the last three race weekends, but we haven’t lost it completely. We’re just careful to make predictions. We are cautiously optimistic.”
