Verstappen: Good feeling about Red Bull upgrades

Barcelona, Spain

Spanish Grand Prix – Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen says that, despite a compromised Friday, he feels the upgrades made to his RB15 are a step in the right direction.

The Dutch driver finished FP2 in P5 for Red Bull, having been forced to take a fresh Honda power unit for the session after his engine developed an oil leak during FP1.

This turned out to be largely inconsequential, as Honda’s Tanabe-San explained the team were running original Spec 1 engines for Friday before a change to the new Spec 2 for Saturday: “Both cars started FP1 with Spec 1 power units with a plan of changing them for Spec 2 tonight, therefore Max’s power unit change has just happened one session earlier than planned.”

Verstappen, despite the setback to his practice, still finished the day enthusiastic as he felt the changes made to the RB15 chassis were a step forward. His best time was 1:18.035, 0.7 from the front, and just ahead of his teammate and the two Haas drivers as Red Bull & Haas fight for best of the rest behind the top two teams.

“During the two practice sessions we tried to improve the car and understand the new updates, which I think we did. I have a good feeling about the upgrades, which work for sure, and the tyres seem to be working quite well, too.”

“The long runs were okay and we still need to find a little bit of pace, but we have the whole night to find it. During FP1 we had an oil leak so we had to change the engine ahead of FP2, which put us a little on the back foot. I think that’s also a little bit of the reason why, in the second practice session, we were not exactly where we wanted to be set-up wise with the balance of the car, but we have enough data to understand and improve it for tomorrow.”
