Jose Maria Lopez will return to Formula E with Dragon Racing, after rookie Neel Jani parted ways from the team after just one race weekend.
The Porsche driver cited a change in plans as the reasoning behind his departure. A planned technical tie-in with Porsche, similar to Andretti’s with BMW, was eventually canned before the start of the 2017/18 season.
Jani scored only a pair of 18th-place finishes during the Hong Kong ePrix weekend, while team mate Jerome D’Ambrosio also struggled. Dragon is the only team to leave the first weekend of the season having not scored points.
Jani’s remaining contracted drive for 2018 is with Rebellion’s new LMP1 campaign.
Triple World Touring Car champion Lopez will replace Jani for the third round of the championship in Marrakesh, but it is unknown whether he will be making a wildcard appearance or remaining with the team for the rest of the season.
Lopez remains a Toyota driver in LMP1, but with no clashes between the two series in 2018, he would successfully be able to compete in both series.
The Argentinian was dropped by DS Virgin at the end of the 2016/17 campaign in favour of rookie Alex Lynn, who stood in for Lopez during the clash between the New York ePrix and the WEC 6 Hours of Nurburgring.
