Berlin E-Prix – Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler’s Daniel Abt says that his confidence was key to winning his home Formula E race.
Abt scored the maximum 29 points available by taking pole position and fastest lap en route to his second FE victory this season, and the first Audi 1-2 in the series.
“It’s super special of course. I keep saying that when I have these weeks that good stuff is going to happen and I had this feeling here,” he said.
“The crowd was so special, it had so much positive energy from the fans. I felt confident all of a sudden today. In qualifying the lap there was not much more in it and was really spot on.
“From there I knew I could win this because so far qualifying has been a real struggle for us but we did it and won, with fastest lap and maximum points. It’s so special for Audi and the team to get a result like this.”
Abt was untroubled in the race, and only came under any pressure when team-mate Lucas di Grassi was put on his tail after Sebastien Buemi’s Renault e.dams coming down the pit lane delayed Abt leaving the garage.
“He seemed very strong in the first stint and in the first few out-laps I didn’t feel very good, the car was sliding quite a lot. Of course you don’t want to give a home win away and I just had to push and suddenly the car felt very good, I felt very confident and the gap just increased again,” Abt said.
Di Grassi reckons Audi had a significant advantage over the rest of the field in Berlin, which was the cornerstone of only the series’ second 1-2 finish after Techeetah scored the first in Santiago.
“I think the Audi car today had a good advantage over the others, so we were super fast. We could only challenge each other.” he said.
“After the pit stop it was very close but my second car had some problem that we have to analyse but I was just happen to bring it home to finish this 1-2. I think the performance would have made for a good battle with Daniel on track, unfortunately this didn’t happen but the 1-2 is a dream come true for Audi.
“We started the year so bad and now we are recovering to second in the championship as a team and scoring my fourth podium in a row.”
