New York ePrix – Renault e.dams have confirmed that championship leader Sebastien Buemi will miss both races in New York with GP2 champion Pierre Gasly standing in.
Buemi’s presence at the inaugural New York double header has been in doubt since the announcement of the calendar in September as it clashed with the World Endurance Championship round at the Nurburgring.
After a long period of negotiation with his Toyota LMP1 team, Buemi has been disallowed from racing in either of the two races taking place this coming weekend.
Red Bull Formula 1 test and reserve driver Gasly will make his Formula E debut as he stands in for Buemi.
“This situation is regrettable because even without this clash, the championship is not a certainty. Despite this unfortunate setback,” said team co-owner Jean-Paul Driot.
“I hope that with Pierre Gasly’s invaluable assistance, Renault e.dams will be able to defend its winning chances.”
Buemi currently has a 32-point advantage over his nearest rival Lucas di Grassi, who will be present in New York.
DS Virgin have confirmed that Buemi’s fellow Toyota WEC driver Jose Maria Lopez will also be missing the New York rounds, but his Formula E team mate Sam Bird will be attending alongside Alex Lynn who will also make his race debut in the all-electric series.
Also racing for Toyota, Stephane Sarrazin is yet to confirm if what his plans are, as has his Techeetah team mate Jean-Eric Vergne who took up a seat at Manor in LMP2 this year.
Nelson Piquet Jr. and Nico Prost are also yet to confirm which series they will be racing in.
