NIO announced that Tom Dillmann will race alongside Oliver Turvey in the 2018/19 Formula E season at the launch of its Gen2 car.
NIO announced last week that Luca Filippi would be departing from the team after a difficult season in which he scored just one point. It has now been confirmed that he will be replaced by Dillmann.
The former Formula V8 3.5 champion has made multiple appearances in Formula E with Venturi, competing for half a season in 2017 before being replaced by Edoardo Mortara for the following season.
He scored his career-best finish of fourth during the New York season four finale while standing in for Mortara, which he also did for the Berlin round as the Swiss-Italian racer was on DTM duties.
NIO launched its 004 Gen2 car at a live event in London. It is believed to be significantly different to its previous powertrains, which have featured two motors, but this year’s car is understood to be running a more traditional single motor.
It is believed that while Filippi carried out much of NIO’s early private testing, Dillmann has also driven the 004 with Turvey getting back into the car in September having recovered from his hand injury which prevented him from taking part in either of the New York races in July.
The car features a new livery, with the familiar turquoise rear phasing into a new white nose.
