NextEV have announced that Gerry Hughes will be promoted to Team Principal, succeeding the late Dr Martin Leach who passed away in November.
Hughes took the position of Acting Team Principal, on top of his existing role of Chief Race Engineer, following Leach’s death.
His engineering experience has seen him work with several Formula One teams, including Red Bull, Caterham and Super Aguri. He also has previous work in IndyCar and touring cars.
Hughes will also be taking on the position of Head of Performance Programme for NIO, who are developing the 1 Megawatt EP9 hypercar using Formula E technology.
“Taking on the role of project lead for both the Formula E team and EP9 supercar programmes will include new challenges for me, but they are challenges that my team and I relish,” Hughes said.
“I must thank everyone at NIO for their support and confidence in me during this transitional period. I am extremely honoured that William Li and Lihong Qin have given me this opportunity and I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that both programmes are a success going forwards.”
