The new Mercedes Formula E team will reveal their driver line-up and their first ever car for the series at next month’s motor show in Frankfurt.
Mercedes Benz enter Formula E later this year, with a full factory team participating in the sixth season of the all-electric racing series.
The 2019/2020 season will see Mercedes enter the sport for the first time, taking over the slot that was held by the HWA AG team last season. HWA are a German company closely aligned with Mercedes, helping with the building of cars and components for Mercedes AMG, on both the roadcar and racecar fronts.
HWA held down the slot on behalf of Mercedes, racing with Venturi powertrains, while Merc themselves prepared a bespoke car and powertrain for the upcoming season. With all the background work now complete, Mercedes will unveil their first car for the series, the Mercedes-Benz EQ Silver Arrow 01, on the 11th of September at Frankfurt’s International Motor Show. They will also announce their driver line-up for the season.
Stoffel Vandoorne is strongly linked with a seat, having driven for HWA last season, while also carrying out testing of the car in Italy and Spain. Gary Paffett also drove for HWA as Vandoorne’s teammate but wasn’t involved in the most recent test in Majorca – instead, Vandoorne was joined by Esteban Gutierrez and Edoardo Mortara – Mortara is already confirmed at Venturi for the 2019/2020 season.
Merc’ Formula 1 team boss Toto Wolff, who is Head of Mercedes Motorsport, will be at the launch to unveil the two drivers and the team principal for the Formula E team.
